KIX Africa 21 and the AU join together to strengthen EMIS in Africa

A regional workshop on Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) in Africa was held in Lomé, Togo, from April 3 to 5. Organized by the KIX Africa 21 Hub (AUF, CONFEMEN, IEF/OIF) in collaboration with the African Union and Togo’s Minister of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education and Handicrafts, the workshop brought together representatives from twelve partner countries. 

The main objective was to consolidate strategic cooperation between these partner countries to move towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and the Continental Strategy for Education in Africa (CESA). 

The opening ceremony was attended by Ms. Thi Hoang Mai TRAN, OIF Representative for West Africa, Prof. Majesté Ihou WATEBA, Togo’s Minister of Higher Education, and Dr. Piyabalo NABÉDÉ, representing Togo’s Minister of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education. 

Over three days, the participants shared their experience and expertise through round tables, topical presentations and group work. They were able to discuss the challenges of exploiting EMIS, identify best practices and explore the opportunities offered by the KIX Africa 21 Hub and the African Union to improve strategies for collecting and using educational data. Other elements such as the harmonization of EMIS, as well as actions to be taken to strengthen national capacities in educational data management were also discussed. 

On the final day, participants drew up a call to action, proposing concrete steps to be taken to strengthen EMIS with the support of the KIX Africa 21 Hub and the African Union. This call, which will be issued by Togo’s Minister of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education, Prof. Komla Dodzi KOKOROKO, will ensure that the recommendations made are effectively implemented. 

The Lomé workshop was a resounding success. It strengthened collaboration between the partner countries, laid the foundations for better use of EMIS and defined a concrete roadmap for improving the quality of education in Africa.
